With a strong local emphasis on education and learning English, qualified teachers are in constant demand. English teaching posts are available at private language schools, local primary and secondary schools and kindergartens, international schools, universities, and institutions such as the British Council.
Work abounds and teaching salaries tend to be fairly high compared to in other countries, but this is needed given the high rental costs in the city.
We often have full-time and part-time vacancies here at English for Asia, teaching classes to primary and secondary level students and at local kindergartens. Many successful candidates will be offered the chance to begin their teaching career almost immediately after course completion.
The CertTESOL is well-known and valued in the city, with many of the better teaching positions requiring a Trinity CertTESOL or CELTA as a minimum qualification.
Experience is valued, so it is important for those seeking work to initially maintain availability for supply work as successful part-time contracts often lead to a permanent full-time post. The introduction of the Native English Teacher Scheme has opened up teaching positions within the local school system.
There is also an ever-growing demand for English teachers across the border in mainland China. With the growing strength of the Chinese RMB, combined with increased teacher salaries and a relatively low cost of living, good teaching positions in China are starting to look more attractive.
A short ferry-ride away, Macao offers yet more teaching opportunities in a unique city combining Chinese and Portuguese culture and architecture.
