In the UK, Trinity College London has corporate recognition from the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), and its respective partners in Wales and Northern Ireland. The CertPT is rated at Level 6 on Ofqual’s Regulated Qualifications Framework, a comparable level to an undergraduate degree.
We recommend a minimum of one year if you already have an initial teaching certificate or qualification, or two years if you do not have a teaching qualification. It should be in a relevant teaching context where you already have taught young learners. This could be in a public or private school, in a monolingual or multilingual environment.
For the purpose of this course, we will mostly be referring to young learners as students aged 5 to 12 years.
The course is very useful for experienced teachers wanting a professional development course and for managers interested in supporting the continuous professional development of their teaching staff in order to raise standards and encourage best practice for teaching young learners within their institution.
The estimated course time is 100 hours, spread over 12 weeks. You should be able to set aside an average of 10 hours per week for the course and writing your assignments.
No. You will need to follow the schedule and complete the online content and tasks and submit the assignments and receive feedback at logical and manageable points through the three-month course. The assignments are quite demanding, so you are unlikely to complete the course in a shorter timeframe. The course content will be made accessible to you according to the timetable and you will not be able to complete tasks in advance of the schedule.
The CertPT is at the same level as the final year of an undergraduate degree and is entirely context-based, focusing on what teachers do with teaching resources in their own classrooms. To write your assignments, you need to provide reflection, insights and references to theory. You must also use academic conventions such as clear organisation, references to sources, and a bibliography.
The course content will be all in English. You can choose to submit your assignments in English or Chinese or a mix of English and Chinese.
If you choose to submit your assignments in Chinese, the minimum language level required is CEFR B2 (IELTS 5.5). If you have completed your assignments in Chinese, this will be stated on your certificate.
For assignments submitted in English, you will need a language level of CEFR C1 (IELTS 7).
If you are not sure of your language level, we can help you take an online test. Your language level will also be assessed in your interview and written tasks as part of your application.
If one, two or three out of your four assignments are not up to a pass standard, you have another chance to resubmit them within four weeks of the Trinity moderation. There will be an additional charge for this.
If you pass, you will receive a Certificate from Trinity College London. If you have completed your assignments in Chinese, this will be stated on your certificate. English for Asia will also provide you with a report form after results have been confirmed by Trinity. This is an overall summary of your performance on the course.
Trinity qualifications are recognised worldwide. See the Recognition and accreditation section above for more.
