    Teaching Young Learners

The Trinity CertPT: Teaching Young Learners provides in-service teachers with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively and confidently teach English to children and adolescents. It draws upon qualified teachers’ existing knowledge of teaching practice and theory, while promoting the acquisition and refinement of the specialist skills needed to develop and use effective teaching resources.

This specialist qualification is designed for teachers who want to update, improve and enrich their professional teaching practice, and develop their ability to evaluate, adapt, create and reflect on the use of context-specific teaching resources for young learners.

This course

  • Provides teachers with a deeper understanding of the theory and practical application of communicative language teaching to create a more interactive classroom while develop their young learners’ language and skills.
  • Includes an in-depth consideration of evaluating, adapting, creating and reflecting on the use of a variety of teaching resources.
  • Is suitable for young learner classrooms, either in monolingual or multilingual environments.
  • 100 hours total qualification time 
  • Part-time over 12 weeks

This specialist course is designed for teachers who want to develop their knowledge and practical skills in the context of teaching Young Learners.

*Comparable in level to an undergraduate degree.

Course dates

The CertPT: Teaching Young Learners runs part-time, online over a period of 12 weeks. It comprises 100 hours' total qualification time, broken into

  • Self-access modules: 32 hours
  • Live workshops: 5 hours
  • Assignment tasks: 63 hours

This course might not be for you if

  • You don’t need an accredited bachelor's degree-level qualification, benchmarked to national qualifications frameworks.
  • You don't have an initial teacher education qualification plus a minimum of one year's teaching experience, or at least two year's teaching experience – try our specialist self-study course Teaching English to Young Learners.
  • You do not meet the minimum language requirements (see FAQ). 

This course is suitable for young learner classrooms, either in monolingual or multilingual environments.

Entry requirements

We assess your suitability for the course throughout the application process, which includes an interview. During the interview, we discuss your teaching and learning experiences – it's also an opportunity for you to ask questions. Acceptance onto the course is at the discretion of the Course Director.

Recognition and accreditation

In the UK, Trinity College London has corporate recognition from the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), and its respective partners in Wales and Northern Ireland. The CertPT is rated at Level 6 on Ofqual’s Regulated Qualifications Framework, a comparable level to an undergraduate degree.
